Maslows Theory

Meeting Our Needs

Human beings are motivated by the requirement to meet their needs.

The well known psychologist, Abraham Maslow, (1970) developed a simple and wise model to explain a ‘hierarchy of needs’ (see below). He explained that we need to satisfy these needs in the order from number one at the bottom of the triangle to number five at the top.

While agreeing with what Maslow teaches in terms of the differentiation of needs and the sequence to satisfy them, at a ‘Hierarchy of Needs workshop’, we emphasise that the planning process needs to follow the opposite sequence – ‘keeping the end in mind’, as Dr Steven Covey teaches in his seven habits of highly effective people.

People often only focus on Levels one and two (physiological and safety/security) and so lose direction and wonder ‘what is it all for?’

Self Actualisation’ and ‘Self Esteem’ are the keys for a sense of destiny and ‘getting there’. They set a context for the other levels. At a ‘Hierarchy of Needs workshop’, the focus is here.
